PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. The mission of the Hopkins County Humane Society goes beyond finding safe, loving homes for homeless animals. We also strive to help families in our community keep the pets they already love. Winter is fast approaching, and we know the requests for assistance will increase. We need our community's help to prepare. Our temporary shelter is just 1/4 the size of our former Laffoon Trail facility, making it even more difficult to house the animals coming into our care. We are often at capacity, with very limited options for taking in additional animals. When donations allow, we offer a pet food pantry to help families who are struggling to feed their pets. However, our first responsibility is to provide for the animals currently in our care. Right now, our food supply is barely only enough to meet those needs, leaving us unable to offer assistance to others. So, how can our community help us help others? PET FOOD: We need dry kibble and canned food for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. An abundance of food would allow us to once again assist families who need a little help keeping their pets fed and at home. DOG HOUSES: As temperatures begin to drop, we know there will be animals in our community needing adequate shelter from the cold. We would love to have dog houses available to help those families who need them. When our shelter is at capacity, we work to help animals remain safe and secure where they are whenever possible. Sometimes that means helping provide a proper outdoor shelter with clean, dry straw (never hay) for insulation. Some dogs genuinely prefer spending time outdoors, but every animal deserves appropriate protection from the elements. This is not a time for judgment. It is a time for preparation, compassion, and working together. Our goal is to help families keep their pets safe and cared for while allowing our limited shelter space to remain available for animals that are lost, abandoned, or truly have nowhere else to go. Every bag of food, every can, and every dog house donated can make a difference. Sometimes a little assistance is all it takes to keep a pet with the family that loves them.
